Disintegration Loops is a set of numbered sound pieces by William Basinski recorded on the morning of September 11th, 2001 in New York City. While running a set of old magnetic tape loops through a recording machine, the magnetic strips--and the audio content contained in them--began to disintegrate, creating a poignant representation of decay appropriate for the historic events occurring simultaneously nearby. The sound pieces were released accompanying video recordings of smoke slowly rising from ground zero.
